Vaccine Coordination at the Maine Immunization Program, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC)

MCD Public Health has provided staffing support to the Maine CDC Division of Infectious Diseases since 2015. Two vaccine coordinators under contract support the Maine Immunization Program (MIP) with quality assurance, education, and quality improvement.

Vaccine coordinators travel throughout Maine for these site visits:

  • VFC (Vaccines for Children) compliance visits aim to assess storage and handling practices, assess understanding of program requirements, and educate providers and provider staff
  • Unannounced Storage and Handling visits educate and help providers improve their storage and handling techniques
  • AFIX (Assessment, Feedback, Incentives, and Exchange) visits target education and partnership around raising immunization rates at the provider level. AFIX as a continuous quality improvement process is an important tool of the Maine Immunization Program.

Vaccine coordinators at MIP also develop and deliver education and information resources for health care providers and the public. This includes providing guidance and education on vaccine schedules as outlined by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as well as presenting sessions at MIP’s Annual Regional Trainings.
