MCHC's Spring Cholesterol and Blood Pressure Trainings

Morning Training (8:30 am-12:00 noon) - Community Cholesterol Screenings - This training is for health professionals involved in community cholesterol screenings. It covers current State and Federal Regulations related to cholesterol screenings and the process for obtaining a Maine State Health Screening Laboratory Permit and a Federal CLIA Certificate. Learning provides: an overview of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, and risk factors; cholesterol explained and why it is important; tips for communicating in plain language; hands-on practice on the necessary steps for performing a quality community and/or worksite cholesterol screening (both Cholestech and Cardiochek measurement devices will be used) Afternoon training (1-4 pm) - Best Practices for Blood Pressure Measurement - Measuring blood pressure is one of the most frequently performed medical tests and is an important part of most patient consultations. However, an increasing body of clinical evidence suggests improper technique and common errors results in patients being: untreated, treated for a condition they don't have, misdiagnosed, and prescribed inappropriate medication management. This training, designed for individuals who regularly take blood pressure measurements, provides: the latest evidence-based and best-practice blood pressure guidelines, tools to support quality improvement strategies, and hands-on practice of accurate BP technique.
